The US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) granted Apple US patent 8,245,924, described as "Techniques and systems for supporting podcasting".

Features in the patent include methods of subscribing, automatic monitoring updates to podcasts, and inclusion of enhanced feeds such as metadata and segment elements.
The patent, originally filed in 2009 was renewed as a continuation in 2011 shows iTunes 4.9, released in 2005 as one of the documents included in the filing. Interestingly enough the term "iPodcast" is shown on the Publish Screen.

The patent win does not grant exclusive rights to the word Podcast. The trademark for the word podcast has been rejected multiple times by the USPTO. On November 16, 2006, Apple’s trademark department stated that Apple does not object to third party usage of "the generic term" "podcast" to refer to podcasting services and that Apple does not license the term.
